Hempstead, NY -- Sophomore guard Charles Jenkins was named the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Basketball Co-Player of the Week it was announced today by the league office.
Jenkins earned the award for the second week in a row and the third time this season, after also winning the first CAA Player of the Week honor on Nov. 17. He shared the honor this week with Marc Egerson of Delaware.
Jenkins averaged 27.0 points and 5.5 assists in two games last week, which the Pride split. He capped off the regular season on Saturday, when he celebrated his 20th birthday by scoring a career-high 35 points, becoming just the second sophomore in Hofstra history to reach the 1,000-point plateau, and helping Hofstra to its 20th win of the season, an 88-81 overtime win over UNC Wilmington.
For the sixth time this season, Jenkins scored the basket that put Hofstra ahead to stay in the final 1:31 of regulation or overtime, when he hit a twisting bank shot with 1:31 left in overtime to put the Pride up 82-81. He also shot 4-4 from the foul line in the final minute to help seal the win. His clutch performances all season long have helped Hofstra compile a 12-2 record in games decided by five points or less (13-2 if you include the seven-point overtime win over UNC Wilmington), giving the Pride more close wins than any team in the nation. Navy, Florida State and Dayton have all won 10 games by five points or less.
Jenkins finished the regular season with 1,011 points, making him the 29th player in school history to score 1,000 points. He joined all-time scoring leader Antoine Agudio as the only players to reach that milestone during their sophomore seasons. Agudio went on to finish his career last season with a school-record 2,276 points, although Jenkins is now 64 points ahead of Agudio's pace at the same stage of their careers (59 games).
The 35 points against UNC Wilmington passed Jenkins' old career high of 33, which he set in the first meeting with UNC Wilmington back on Jan. 28. He will get a chance to see if he can continue his mastery of the Seahawks this weekend, as the fifth-seeded Pride (20-10, 11-7 CAA) drew 12th-seeded UNC Wilmington (7-24, 3-15 CAA) in the opening round of the CAA Tournament at the Richmond (Va.) Coliseum on Friday at 2:30 p.m. The winner of that game will face fourth-seeded Old Dominion (20-9, 12-6 CAA) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The semifinals will be played on Sunday, with the championship game scheduled for Monday night at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
