The Drury women's tennis team earned their 20th victory of the season as they cruised past the Norse of Northern Kentucky 5-1 in opening round action of the NCAA-II Midwest Regional Friday at Cooper Tennis Complex.
Drury (20-1) captured doubles wins by seniors Katia Bon and Khrystsina Tryboi 9-7 at No. 1 , Pelagie Gamo and Abbey Sharpe 8-4 at No. 2. The Norse took No. 3 doubles 8-3. Drury singles winners were Bon 6-2, 6-0, Gamo 6-1, 6-0 and Sharpe 6-1, 6-3
The Norse concluded the 2010 season with an 11-6 mark. Today's match was the third time this season, the Panthers and Norse have faced off with DU winning 5-0 in their last meeting in Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship title match at Cooper indoors on April 24. Coach Jarrod Smith's 18th ranked Panthers also defeated NKU 8-1 indoors at Cooper on Feb. 19.
No. 3 seed and 28th ranked Grand Valley State defeated No. 6 seed Ashland 5-1 in the morning match. The Lakers (21-8) earned a sport in Saturday's 10 a.m. match vs. Drury at Cooper Tennis Complex. The winner of Saturday's match will advance to the NCAA-II Sweet 16 next Wednesday through Saturday in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
