The 2011 Women’s U25 World Wheelchair Basketball Championships are set to kick-off this weekend and the U.S. is one of eight countries competing at the inaugural event. The Americans open pool play on July 15 with a game against Mexico.
Team USA is being coached by two-time wheelchair basketball Paralympic gold medalist Stephanie Wheeler (Champaign, Ill.), while the roster features 2008 Paralympic gold medalist Becca Murray (Germantown, Wis.) and a slew of 2012 Paralympic hopefuls.
The tournament is the first-ever World Championship for women in the under-25 age category and represents a milestone in the ongoing growth of wheelchair basketball. The seven-day competition will showcase the elite talent of the top young female wheelchair basketball athletes from Australia, Canada, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Mexico, South Africa and the United States.
