Before and after the ball dropped in Times Square to celebrate the arrival of 2012, some of the world's greatest past and present handball playes took to the handball court for the Big Apple Handball Tournament at the Riverbank State Park.
The weekend's marquee matchup was between the World All-Stars and Bundesliga All-Stars. Henning Fritz, Magnus Wislander, Ljubomir Vranjes, Mirza Dzomba, Goran Sprem, Vedran Zrnic, and Andrei Klimovet were just a few of the faces that handball legends fans in New York City were treated to.
In a closely-contested battle, the Bundesliga All-Stars came out on top, winning 32:30. The match was broadcast live in Europe on Sport 1.
In the third incarnaration of the actual tournament, featuring players from across the world and the United States, Handballwoche edged Mittelhessen in a penalty shootout to claim gold. Legendary French handball player Jackson Richardson presented the winners with their trophy.
As in the gold medal game, the bronze medal match was decided via a penalty shootout with hosts New York City Team Handball Club falling to Kabel BW. Men's National Team player Adam El Zoghby suited for NYC THC.
