Participate Sport, organisers of the 2012 Etape Cymru closed road sportive, have today announced that Macmillan Cancer Support will be the official charity partner of the event.
The partnership will see Macmillan join forces with the event for 2012. Funds raised from participants will be used to help Macmillan support the thousands of people affected by cancer in the UK.
The Etape Cymru takes place on Sunday 9th September 2012 on fully closed roads. It will again feature a hugely challenging route including the Horseshoe Pass, fantastic scenery and local support. The route and organisation will receive some major modifications from the inaugural event in 2011.
Nick Rusling, CEO of Participate Sport said: “We have worked in partnership with Macmillan for many years. They are a delight to support and hugely professional. It is extremely rewarding to see how the British public still embrace fundraising for charity as part of their cycling event experience.”
Craig Fordham, Head of Challenge Events for Macmillan, said: “We are delighted to be the official charity partner for the Etape Cymru and to continue our excellent relationship with Participate Sport. We hope the knowledge that riders’ efforts are helping to support people affected by cancer will encourage and motivate more people to join Team Macmillan and take part in this fantastic event.”
Participants wishing to register for the Etape Cymru 2012 and raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support should visit www.etape-cymru.co.uk and tick the box to fundraise for Macmillan during the registration process.

The Etape Cymru is the UK’s toughest closed road sportive featuring a stunning, tough route and over 3,000 of climbing. Situated in the picturesque surroundings of North Wales the ride features lots of climbing including the signature Horeshoe Pass where Team Sky cyclist Geraint Thomas currently holds the record.
By improving the running of the sportive for 2012, Participate Sport will ensure that the event matches the standard of the fantastic setting. Participate will be investing in key areas such as the start process and the integrity of the closed road, meaning riders will receive a top-class experience.
The event will take place on Sunday 9th September 2012 on fully closed roads with the support of Wrexham and Denbighshire County Councils.
